Working as a kitchen fitter, I spend most of my time in kitchens dreaming up my own personal DIY projects. My dream DIY job is to make over my fireplace! My fireplace is a gas unit in the corner of my living room, which is actually on a false wall. I plan on knocking down the top half of the false wall in order to create a custom nook to house the flat screen TV. This is a slightly intimidating DIY because it will involve cutting through stud beams and moving electrical wires which are running behind this wall. Additionally I would like to cover the fireplace wall with beautiful rustic stone tile, and add a decorative mantle. For the final touch I plan on replacing the cheap looking fake logs with a more modern and abstract stone fireplace insert. All of these changes will turn the fireplace into the focal point of the room, and it will be much more fitting with the mid-century modern décor of the living room. |

A few years ago, my son and I finished our basement ourselves. My son works for a steel cladding company, and I'd run my own builder's yard before I'd retired, so we are both dab hands at these kinds of projects.
However, we left an unfinished space in the back to be used as a workshop for my tools and building equipment. After the basement was done and a new shed was put up in our yard, I really have no need for a large workshop in the basement. What I am going to do to change this is to convert half of the workshop into a 400 bottle wine cellar. We recently have been collecting wines and it would be nice to have a classy cellar to store them in to show off to guests and to keep the bottles out of the upstairs area. I am planning on building the wine cellar this summer and excited to make more changes to my home! |

Your garden or patio is a suitable place to entertain visitors if there is not enough space to do so in your living room. You can make your outdoor space more welcoming with the addition of a fireplace. These fireplaces can serve as a focal point in our home exterior design. It can be the centerpiece of your garden or break the monotony in your patio.
There are plenty of hearth designs you can choose from that will go well with your exterior motif. If you have a beautifully designed garden you can choose fireplaces made of brick or natural stone. Not only will an inglenook provide warmth for your visitors it can also add to the aesthetic design of your home. You can arrange a separate set of sofas and chairs around the hearth to increase the seating capacity of your abode. For great ideas in outdoor fireplace plans you can simply do some browsing on the internet and look for websites on home improvements. |

If you have a wide bathroom you are lucky to have so much room for improvement. You can install those bathroom floor cabinets that could be so handy for providing extra storage space for your essentials. These are lovely pieces of furniture that you can place in your bathroom. They resemble a tall or a midsized tower containing several drawers. You can use these drawers to store an assortment of bathroom linen like towels, bathrobes, bathroom curtains, etc. Some may have a tabletop which you can place bottles of lotion, shampoo and other containers of beauty products.
These handsome looking towers could be made of either natural wood or polished metal. They won’t occupy too much floor space in the bathroom but they have a large capacity for storage of a lot of stuff. Their delicate designs command so much attention because it adds to the enhancement of your bathroom interiors. It is one of the elegant accents you can place in the bathroom that has both function and good form. |

If there is one area that I would really like to revamp is our basement. I'm not the best at DIY - I struggle even with instant awnings when we set up a barbeque! - but that won't stop me from paying a professional to do DIY around the house.
The basement in our home has become a “catch all” of tools, outgrown clothing and toys, and other items that have worth but that we don't use one a daily basis. Though our home is only six years old, we have not yet gotten around to renovate it by adding sheet rock walls, carpeting tiles and a drop ceiling. As our son has grown up, his toys have become larger and our home at times looks more like a Toys R Us, rather than a place to live! I would love to do a complete basement renovation, with a designated playroom, office space for my husband, and storage and laundry space. I would love to be able to safely send our son down there to play out of sight and not underfoot! This would also allow us to clean up the entire house, because it would move a lot of his toys downstairs to a designated playroom space, and I can get his pinball machines out of my craft room/office! |
